Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund "Flight" in Clarksburg, WV

US 4 Palin "Fly Sarah from Wasilla to Washington" Campaign

How to "Fly 'Sarah' from Wasilla to Washington"

There is no need to email us donation amounts or post them on comments. As long as you donate through an US for Palin graphic or hyperlink to the Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund, we'll know about it, whether it's on the US for Palin site or a venue where its content is syndicated.

Let's help the Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund reach new heights and get Gov. Palin to Washington!

Laura had come back from pre-flighting the plane, doing run-up, getting the weather info and filing her flight plan from Lunken Municipal to Clarksburg, West Virginia. “Sarah” was on her laptop posting on her Facebook wall and firing off a Tweet from her Blackberry. “We’ve got some isolated thunderstorms to the southwest of us. They’re far enough to not bother us…best we get going. If the storms come closer, we’re going to have to wait.” “Sarah” agreed, and the pair went to the plane, and Laura got the clearance. They would take off toward the southwest, then turn southeast, overfly York, Kentucky, then turn northeast to Clarksburg.

Laura climbed to 7,000 feet and stayed there for the duration of the flight’s enroute segment. The flight mainly followed the Ohio River – the Mississippi River’s largest tributary as it wound its way through Ohio and Kentucky.

This flight to Clarksburg is a pit-stop to bring “Sarah” closer to Reagan National. It is the last day flight. Reagan National, being one of the nation’s busy airports is no place to be bringing a Cessna 172 during most of the day and even the night. Instrument flights require a reservation 72 hours in advance except between midnight and 6 AM. Not wanting to mix it up with the airliners, “Sarah” and Laura agreed to make the last flight a “redeye.”

“So, Laura, what are you going to do after you leave me in Washington?” “Sarah” asked. “Well,” she said wistfully. “I’m going to meet my husband, then re-position the plane likely in southern New Jersey – the Flying W. From there…I don’t know. We’ve been talking about seeing California. This might be a good time to do it. Then fly along the coast back to Alaska. We could also fly straight back to Alaska. I’d probably go via Toronto, and work my way back to Winnipeg, then reverse our old route – except I’d like to re-enter Alaska via Juneau. It depends on how my husband can structure vacation from his job.”

“Sarah” and Laura talked about these possible trips as the flight progressed. “Sarah” would continue endorsing and campaigning, speaking, writing, hosting and guest-appearing on Fox – for now. “’Sarah,’ I think there is a greater plan for you. I think your place is in a certain building a few miles off the departure end of Runway 1 at Reagan National. The next time my flight is grounded by a Presidential flight restriction, it better be because of YOU,” Laura said. “Sarah” smiled and answered. “Thank you, m’am.”

Entering West Virginia, Laura saw towering cumulus clouds beginning to form. “We’re OK to pass here, “Sarah” she said, but I can see these turning into thunderstorms later.” The flat bottom, and the towering formations were precursors. Laura was instructed to descend head northeast and prepare for the instrument approach to the runway oriented southwest. She prepared the approach, and was instructed to descend to 2900 feet. The Pennsylvania state line appeared on the GPS. Laura marveled at how far this flight had gone. Soon, they would only be 166 nautical miles from Washington – 3178 from Wasilla.

Laura was instructed to turn to the southeast. She could see two large gray clouds and they appeared to be right over the approach to the airport. “See those, ‘Sarah’? Betcha, that’s why I was given this instrument approach.”

Sure enough, as Laura began the approach, the clouds were square in her flight path. As she got the airport’s weather briefing, “few clouds at 100” bothered her. “If we have to go missed, our filed alternate is Morgantown.” “Sarah” agreed. The cockpit went silent except for Laura calling out her usual “1,000 feet”, “500 feet”, “200 feet”, “100 feet,” and minimums on the approach. “Sarah” was familiar with – and agreed with keeping the cockpit sterile of non-flight related conversation during approaches.

The flight entered the clouds and broke out 500 feet above decision height. Laura landed and taxied to tie-down.

“OK, ‘Sarah’ I’m going to review the procedures for flying in DC’s airspace. I know them, but a review is always good. This last leg is going to be the shortest one – but the most important one. ”

“See you here at around 11 PM tomorrow?” “Sarah” said. “Yes. 11 it is.” As they parted, Laura realized that after tomorrow’s farewell, she might never see “Sarah” this close again. The pang nearly left Laura doubled over. She pushed it out of her mind. Those procedures needed a review. Best to focus on the job at hand, and so she did.

Respectful Distance

Laura could see that “Sarah” was still amped up from her speech at Eureka College the day before, where tens of thousands gathered from points worldwide. Laura knew how “Sarah” felt about having her own space after events and was not about to become the aviation version of the perky one. She maintained a respectful distance, quietly getting the weather briefing, filing the flight plan, pre-flighting the plane, doing the run-up, then shutting down and coming back. Laura, too was not feeling particularly talkative. She wanted to silently savor this moment with her heroine. This trip to Cincinnati would be the last of their long flights together. “Sarah” is 2718 miles from Wasilla with only 362 miles remaining to Reagan National after this flight.

Finally, Laura broke the silence. “OK ‘Sarah’. It’s time.” They walked out to the plane. Laura gave the safety briefing got the clearance and taxied to take-off to the southeast. As they taxied, a C-130 landed.

Laura was cleared to take off and climbed toward her filed altitude of 7,000 feet.

Farewell Peoria and Eureka

The airport, the Illinois River, and the city slipped by. Their flight path would take them away from Eureka’s campus - forever.

Both Laura and “Sarah” felt that pang. Laura would never see the campus again. Watching "Sarah" speak there was a fleeting stop on her life’s journey. She turned to “Sarah” who clearly realized that her travels would take her to many new destinations. On her travels, "Sarah" would visit the world's leaders and the world's poorest. She'll likely visit places full of joy and full of strife; But, that speech in Eureka was once in a lifetime.

A second pang hit Laura – her flying time with “Sarah” was in its waning hours. After this trip, they had two more flights left – with three, maybe four hours between them. Laura pushed it out of her mind. “Enjoy it while you have it,” she thought. The only sound in the cockpit was the steady drone of the propeller. The view was clear. No thunderstorms. No valleys of darkness. Cornfields stretched as far as the eye could see.

Turbulence

As the flight passed over Central Illinois Regional, some cumulus clouds formed bringing turbulence with them. Laura accepted the first jolt, and the second. As the third one hit, she turned to "Sarah" then requested and received an altitude increase to 9,000 feet, her voice quivering slightly – emotional overload from Eureka. There it was smooth. The flight passed Champaign Illinois, and crossed into Indiana. Laura set her watch and the plane's clock to Eastern Daylight Time. “Sarah” did not wear a watch, but had pre-set her Blackberry prior to shutting it down.

Indianapolis

More clouds formed near Indianapolis. As the flight entered Indianapolis’ airspace, the controller vectored Laura for a visual approach to Cincinnati Lunken Municipal Airport’s northeast-facing runway. “Sarah” mentioned the Indianapolis 500 and her trip to the Daytona 500 earlier in the year, something the pair spoke briefly about. Then, “Sarah” turned to Laura. “Thank you, Laura,” she said. “For what?” Laura asked? “For respecting my space when I needed it the most. It did not go unnoticed,” “Sarah” said. Laura turned around and smiled. “My pleasure.”

Arrival to Cincinnati

The instruction came to descend to 2,500 feet. The flat cornfields and farms gave way to rolling hills. A large refinery could be seen ahead along with the Ohio River and Cincinnati International.

The flight would leave Indiana, cross a snippet of Kentucky and enter Ohio.

The flight passed Cincinnati International on a southerly track, then turned east. Downtown Cincinnati came into view.

Lunken was across the river but obscured by trees. Laura found it and was instructed to fly parallel to the runway with it off her right wing. Right now, it was to her left. Laura clicked off the auto-pilot. “Time for some good old fashioned hand-flying,” she said. She turned the plane east for a minute, then turned back to the west, then southwest, setting up the directed right-hand traffic landing pattern. Laura was cleared to land.

She flew over the Ohio River, then turned, descended some, and turned again to line up for the runway. The terrain was rather high, but Laura managed the descent angle and speed and smoothly touched down.

She taxied to parking. Laura did the post-flight checklist and tied the plane down. She turned to “Sarah,” barely able to get the words out:

“You’ve answered your summons. We have one more intermediary flight – Clarksburg, West Virginia.” Laura gulped a mouthful of air and finished, “ then, our final flight will take you to the place where you’ll execute the summons. I know you’re ready.”

Let's help the Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund reach new heights and get Gov. Palin to Washington!

The Speech

"Sarah" and Laura had completed their usual pre-flight duties. They got their weather briefing, filed the flight plan and had to wait. This flight would take them to Peoria, IL. There, a motorcade would pick up "Sarah" and take her to Eureka College to give what would be her version of The Speech, which they watched on "Sarah's" laptop computer.

Having watched the video, it was time to leave. The pair hopped in the plane, Laura did the run-up and got her clearance. A LearJet was sequenced ahead of her. "'Sarah,' the next trans-continental trip we do, I'll take you in that," Laura said.

After the Lear took off, Laura was cleared for her takeoff. As they departed, "Sarah" bid farewell to Lake Onalaska

The Mighty Mississippi River

Laura had filed for and received a clearance to cruise at 7,000 feet. The mighty Mississippi River came into view off the right wing.

Thunderstorm in Dubuque

Near Dubuque, IA, "Sarah" and Laura spotted a large isolated cumulus cloud. The rain shaft was clearly visible.

Flying through clouds was no mean feat of course for Laura, who is a skilled instrument pilot. Then she saw a flash of light from within the cloud, followed by another. The forked lightning strikes clearly indicated a thunderstorm - which did not come up on the weather briefing - but it came up here. Laura immediately requested a descent to 5,000 feet to stay below the thunder cloud, and permission to deviate toward the southwest, then back so as to go around it.

As Laura went around the cloud, she started planning a possible diversion. If this storm grew or followed the flight, Laura would divert to the nearest airport and land. Yes, "Sarah's" family was waiting for her in Eureka. Her hair dresser from Wasilla - Jessica Steele - was waiting too, only "Sarah" did not know that. The arrangement was a gift, and Laura had her little hands in that one. But, Laura was a disciplined pilot, and "Sarah" a disciplined passenger. Getting there alive, and with a plane that could be used again was something of a priority. While poor visibility kills pilots without an instrument rating, thunderstorms and icing are the killers for those with the rating. Laura knew that. She carefully watched the storm and saw it was stationary. Soon, the potentially life-threatening monster was left behind. The pair decided to continue the flight.

Quad Cities, Where the Mississippi River Runs East-West

The flight passed Quad Cities. Here the Mississippi River runs east to west rather than north to south. It is the only location in the United States, where the Mississippi River takes this turn.

Laura received her clearance for the approach to Peoria. The instruction was to fly to the southwest of the airport and land on the runway oriented northeast. Laura setup the approach on the GPS.

The plane was buffeted about as the approach began, just like in La Crosse. The pair thought nothing of it. The approach was perfect.

Laura has passed decision height and was ready to land, when a violent wind shear struck. There was no time to check on her passenger. Laura immediately applied full power, raised the flaps one notch at a time and told the controller she was going around.

"Sorry 'Sarah,' " she said. "That landing could not be saved, and" "Sarah" interrupted, "You did the right thing, Laura. It's all good."

Laura got setup to re-do the approach. "Sarah" and Laura both saw that some clouds which were over the airport were now south.

The second approach got them in. Laura taxied to General Aviation and tied down. The motorcade pulled in to get "Sarah" and her pilot. "Sarah" had a summons to answer.

Eureka College could be the place where Gov. Palin's summons to carry the Reagan legacy would be answered.

Beeline to La Crosse Before Thunderstorms Arrive

Laura ran over to “Sarah” with the weather prediction. Low clouds were forming over Minnesota and Wisconsin with thunderstorms forecast for the evening. “'Sarah,’ if we’re going to fly today, we need to leave very soon. Aircraft have to stay at least 25 miles from thunderstorms. This trip is mostly going to be through clouds; there’s going to be some turbulence. If we wait much longer, we’re going to have to cancel and do it tomorrow.”

It did not take too long for “Sarah” to consider it. The next flight would bring her to Peoria, where would speak at Eureka College – President Ronald Wilson Reagan’s alma mater. Canceling would mean an extended 400-mile flight from Duluth to Peoria, rather than two more pleasant flights of 200 miles each.

“File the flight plan and get the clearance, Laura. I’m ready.”

Laura filed, pre-flighted, did the run-up, got the clearance, shut down, and went to get “Sarah”. Laura gave her passenger the required safety briefing, ensured safety belts on, and fired up. They would depart to the west, then turn to the southeast for the 90-minute flight.

After takeoff, per the clearance, the flight turned southeast. The cloud cover was broken, but closing fast.

“Sarah” turned to bid Lake Superior a farewell.

The flight had been cleared for 5,000 feet originally, but cloud tops were predicted to be 7,000. Laura requested an altitude increase to 7,000, but the tops grew even higher and the broken clouds went complete overcast. The entire enroute portion was spent shrouded in clouds, just as Laura predicted.

The controller instructed Laura to descend to 2,900 feet. She would be landing on the runway facing due south using an instrument approach. At about 3,500 feet the flight broke out of clouds, and the airport could be seen in the distance. La Crosse Municipal is located on French Island, which is surrounded by Lake Onalaska. Both Laura and “Sarah” felt something very familiar when they saw the lake. It had an Alaskan feel to it – perhaps accounting for why it is called Lake Onalaska. Part of the lake is in Minnesota. I-90 bisects French Island. The Mississippi River passes through La Crosse as well.

As Laura began the approach, the plane received two jolts of turbulence. “Sarah” could see Lake Onalaska out the front and out her side window.

At 300 feet above decision height, the plane began to cross Lake Onalaska. Laura executed a smooth landing and parked at the General Aviation ramp. “Sarah” is now 2,512 nautical miles from Wasilla. She is now over 75% of the way to Reagan National Airport in Washington DC. “Sarah’s” next flight is to Peoria, one of the most significant stops on the journey.

Alaska. Lake Onalaska. Eureka College – Reagan’s Alma Mater. Reagan National. Providential.

Sarah Palin: Journey into the Media’s Heart of Darkness

Governor Palin today addressed via FaceBook Note how the members of Journolist were acting as partisan political operatives.

How ironic that on a day when we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, The Daily Caller released 15 pages of JournoListers’ email exchanges about a dark and demented conspiracy regarding my son, Trig.

It’s tough to fittingly describe these numerous members of the mainstream media who actively engaged in the debate about this conspiracy back when I was first introduced as John McCain’s running mate, and it’s impossible to legitimize any “prominent” media publication that continues to traffic in this bizarre narrative today. It wasn’t just a few fringe characters in that JournoList discussion. It included writers for major newspapers, magazines, and online news publications. Those participating in this immature exchange in attempts to plant seeds of doubt and falsely accuse even included a famous historian.

This JournoList exchange exposes the warped nature of today’s media, thus explaining why many of us are forced, in fairness to the public, to utilize other mediums to communicate until the mainstream media wakes up and begins respecting the public’s intelligence and desire for truth in reporting. There is a sickness and darkness in today’s liberal media. With revelations like the JournoList exchanges, may the light keep shining to expose the problem.

It’s always darkest before the dawn. My hope, therefore, is that today, marking the anniversary of our nation’s attempt to show respect for our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters with special needs, will also mark the beginning of a new, more respectful discourse among members of our media who at least aspire to be fair and objective.

North to the Future: A Year Later

Governor Palin entered a brave new world a year ago today, with a leap of faith, turning over her gubernatorial powers to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell. Supporters were simultaneously excited and fearful about what lied ahead. Her enemies chortled "quitter," with glee. Gov. Palin's administration had been bombarded with frivolous ethics complaints and lawsuits, which hamstrung state business.

Dual Rationale: Simple and Brilliant

The dual rationale behind her resignation was as simple as it was brilliant: first, the nonsense would stop under quiet, Transactional Leader Gov. Parnell who would continue Gov. Palin's legacy. Second, free of the Governor's Office, Gov. Palin could better serve our nation and make a bigger impact. Indeed, both objectives have been fulfilled. The complaints did stop, though a few came in after she left office. Gov. Parnell is continuing the Palin legacy.

Her Promise

"With this decision I will be able to fight even harder for you – for what is right and for the truth. And I have never felt that you need a title to do that. So, as we all move forward together, let us vow to keep championing Alaska and to advocate for responsible development and smaller government and freedom."

When I took the oath to serve you, I promised to steadfastly and doggedly guard the interests of this great state – like that grizzly guards her cubs, as a mother naturally guards her own. I will keep that vow wherever the road may lead.

A Year of Accomplishments

As a private citizen:

  • Gov. Palin shaped and defined the debate on ObamaCare, Cap and Tax, and national security via her Facebook page.
  • She endorsed numerous candidates for governor, Senator, and Representative, via Facebook, Twitter; and in many cases campaigned with her endorsed candidates. Even the liberal mainstream media has taken notice of the fact that over 75% of her endorsed candidates won their elections where elections have been held thus far.
  • SarahPAC is a political and financial powerhouse.
  • She is building political capital and power, which will enable her to re-define the GOP as a Reagan Conservative party and pave the way to a possible 2012 Presidential run.
  • Gov. Palin achieved one million supporters on her Facebook page around the time her book tour began and is now closing in on two million. Her Twitter page has over 205,000 followers.
  • She has been on a public speaking speaking circuit, which began in Hong Kong and has taken her all over the United States.
  • She authored Going Rogue: An American Life, which was Number One on the New York Times Best-Seller's List for six weeks; presided over a three-week long nationwide book tour where supporters camped out in front of book stores for over 24 hours before each event in all kinds of weather. Going Rogue is going paperback on August 24, 2010.
  • Gov. Palin is working on a second book: America by Heart : Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag due for release on November 23, 2010.
  • She became a Fox News Consultant
  • Gov. Palin began a special series: Real American Stories
  • She is working on a mini-series: Sarah Palin's Alaska being filmed for TLC.

Last year, we said that having fulfilled her agenda in 31 months, Gov. Palin's purpose as a Transformational Leader was served. We wrote that placing a Transactional Leader in charge of maintaining her legacy, while she climbed a new mountain was the right move. A year later, Gov. Palin surpassed even our wildest expectations.

North to the Future. We look forward with excitement at the journey ahead.

Journolist’s anti-Palin crusade of 2008

Manhattan-based conservative columnist and commentator Jedediah Bilah described in detail the mechanics of how the liberal Journolist plotted their anti-Palin news coverage during the 2008 campaign.

In a damning indictment of the now defunct listserv, Jedediah Bilah reported how this journalist's group was a de facto campaign headquarters whose mission was to discredit Gov. Palin and get Obama elected.

She will be on Hannity's Great American's Panel tonight at 2130 (9:30 PM) EDT.

Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund "Flight" in Duluth, MN

US 4 Palin "Fly Sarah from Wasilla to Washington" Campaign
"Sarah" is now in Duluth, MN

How to "Fly 'Sarah' from Wasilla to Washington"

There is no need to email us donation amounts or post them on comments. As long as you donate through an US for Palin graphic or hyperlink to the Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund, we'll know about it, whether it's on the US for Palin site or a venue where its content is syndicated.

Let's help the Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund reach new heights and get Gov. Palin to Washington!

Farewell, Canada and Thank You

“OK ‘Sarah’…you have your passport and Customs form ready?” Laura inquired as she pre-flighted the plane. “You betcha, ‘Sarah’” said, fresh from electrifying the trade conference where she had just spoken. Laura had accompanied “Sarah” to this speech and was still awed. The pair would be leaving Winnipeg and finally re-entering the United States and landing in Duluth, Minnesota. They agreed on a day flight, since Duluth is a small airport – they would also be passing over the state’s many lakes and the day promised good visibility. Having already gotten the weather, filed the flight plan, they jumped in and Laura gave “Sarah” her safety briefing, did the run-up and got her clearance.

The flight would leave the northwest facing runway, turn southeast, climb to 5,000 feet, enter Minnesota, continue till just over Bemidji Regional, then turn east passing over Grand Rapids, then to Duluth.

Re-Entering the United States

About 15 minutes – 30 miles from the border, Laura called the US controller to advise that her flight would be crossing the border. She zoomed the GPS in so “Sarah” could see the moment of passage. On July 21, at 3:31 CDT, the flight left Canada and re-entered the United States. “Welcome back,” Laura said. “Sarah” smiled.

The flight passed the first of the many lakes the pair would be seeing. “Sarah” could see dozens of them on the GPS, which had been zoomed back out. “Guess that’s why they call Minnesota ‘the land of 10,000 lakes,’ she quipped, to which Laura added with some fake sarcasm “Yep. The state has a couple.”

Pioneers 150 Years Ago - Today's Pioneers

The flight reached Bemidji Regional and turned east, the little airport clearly visible below. As the flight turned, Laura and “Sarah” discussed another Laura who was born in Walnut Grove near the state’s southwestern corner – in 1867. Laura Ingalls-Wilder was born to a pioneer family and authored many books about her life in Minnesota, Kansas, and what was then Dakota Territory. The TV series Little House on the Prairie was based on Laura Ingalls-Wilder’s books. She was also the subject of many biographies.

The mention was apropos. Alaska is known as the Final Frontier. Many Alaskans would be considered today’s pioneers. “Alaska is what America was,” says one friend who US for Palin’s publisher is in routine contact with. Another is building a house over 200 miles north of Wasilla, having cleared her own land. She stays armed on her property to protect herself from bears that frequent the area. Indeed many of us in the Lower 48 marvel at today’s living pioneer personified in “Sarah” – the kind of leader we also have not seen in 150 years – someone who leads by example. Indeed "Sarah's" parents fulfilled their Manifest Destiny when they left Sandpoint, ID for Skagway, AK. Laura mentioned the irony that now, "Sarah's" Manifest Destiny -  was east.

Land of 10,000 Lakes

Between Bemidji and Grand Rapids, the flight passed over dozens of small lakes. “Sarah” and Laura marveled at their beauty.

Clouds formed beneath them, but dissipated in about 10 minutes.

Passing Grand Rapids marked the beginning of the journey’s end. Laura was instructed to fly north of Duluth. Some puffer clouds were visible to the right, as the flight approached Lake Superior.

Lake Superior

Out over Lake Superior, the flight turned south, then west to begin the approach to Duluth’s west-facing runway.

Go Around!

A Beech Baron was landing ahead of them and another flight was sequenced behind them. Laura was flying a normal approach speed, but had a feeling it was a bit fast. “I think we’re going around, ‘Sarah.’” She saw that “Sarah” was sitting back anyway – she did not want the force of her acceleration snapping “Sarah’s” body back into the seat – even though they had their belts on for the whole flight.

The plane was just above decision height when the controller barked, “N012SP - Go around!” The Baron had not cleared the runway. Laura took one last look to check on her passenger, and powered back up. Laura let her own body snap back - for her it was a big hoot.  On the climb and now flying southeast, “Sarah” and Laura could see the rising moon.

They went back out over Lake Superior, turned north, then back west to re-do the approach.

Welcome (Back) to the United States

The runway beckoned, and Laura made a perfect landing, and taxied to the Customs Building, to pass Immigration and Customs. Having done that, Laura then re-positioned the plane to General Aviation parking.

“Sarah” is now 2330 miles from Wasilla and more than two thirds of the way to Reagan National. The next flight will take her to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and the following one to Peoria for a significant speech at Eureka College.

Exclusive interview with AK’s Lt. Gov GOP candidate Eddie Burke

Manhattan-based conservative columnist and commentator Jedediah Bilah conducted an exclusive interview with Eddie Burke, she reported today. Bilah admires Burke's down-to-earth nature, a quality not often seen in politicians from the Northeast. Eddie Burke is a Reagan Conservative running for Lieutenant Governor of Alaska and major Sarah Palin supporter. He is pro individual freedom and liberty, pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, has a keen understanding of "peace through strength," the Tenth Amendment, and state sovereignty.

Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund "Flight" in Winnipeg, CA

The Long Night Ahead

While Laura was on one computer getting the weather, and filing her flight plan, "Sarah" was on her laptop feverishly typing out a Facebook Note, then picked up her Blackberry to Tweet the Note. Laura went out to do the pre-flight and get the plane ready. She placed a big Thermos full of "Sarah's" favorite caffeinated beverage iced diagonally behind her own seat and secured it. "Sarah" emerged. The one bad thing about these flights: no Facebook, no Tweeting, no calls enroute - against FAA regs because it plays havoc with the instruments. Laura did her usual safety briefing, did the run-up and got her clearance for the long night ahead. It was around 12:40 AM, when they hit the runway.

One Step Forward, One Back, One Forward....

The clearance took the flight to a navaid just west of the airport, but the flight departed to the east. So, Laura had to fly east, do a 180, reach the navaid and do another 180 to put the flight on its ultimate course. This time it was only a few miles, not 80 miles like at Beaver Creek. In the climb to 9,000 - which Laura filed for to get a little more oomph out of the non-turbocharged engine - the pair could not help but once again notice how this mirrored the requirement to form a certain Legal Defense Fund.

Just a year ago, "Sarah" had to make a leap of faith, to leave the darkness of having her job hamstrung by frivolous ethics complaints and suits. But her leap heralded a new era of accomplishment. In essence, her enemies had done her a favor, allowing her to unlock her highest potential.

They reached altitude and clear skies ahead, but Laura and "Sarah" were not fooled. The temperature and dew point spread were only two degrees apart, meaning conditions were ripe for clouds. Laura zoomed the GPS out. The Lower 48 appeared. The flight would be passing north of Montana and North Dakota.

Earning Trust

Not long after reaching 9,000 feet, the clouds indeed started forming, and the plane received three large jolts of turbulence. Laura requested clearance to climb to 11,000 away from the turbulent air beneath the forming clouds. Laura was not going to give her passenger a rough ride. At 11,000 the ride was smooth. "Laura, I'm going to catch 40 winks," "Sarah" said. Laura was flattered. It meant that "Sarah" really trusted her and her judgment. Laura paused then said, "yes, you have that meeting later this morning. You need to be fresh and ready."

A New Day...

But, "Sarah" did not sleep too long. She is extremely attuned to her natural surroundings and well aware that a new day was dawning. She could not resist the beauty that was about to unfold before her. The faint light ahead gave way to a pinkish, purplish hint to the north and east.

At least half the flight would require reference to instruments, as it traveled in and between cloud layers.

Winnipeg drew closer, and the clouds thickened.

From the Darkness, a New Beginning

Laura was given an instrument approach to the northwest facing runway and instructed to descend to 2700 and turn to a heading that paralleled the approach. A jet was sequenced ahead. The sun started to rise, and the controller turned the flight east, affording "Sarah" and Laura a brief command view.

Shortly after, Laura had to turn to the airport.

The time had come to begin the approach and land.

The sun was now almost completely over the horizon as Laura smoothly landed.

During the long taxi to parking, "Sarah" drank her iced coffee, fuel that would carry her through the trade conference where she was to speak. Winnipeg would be the last stop in Canada. The next leg would take them to Duluth, Minnesota, about 275 miles away. "Sarah" is now 2,055 miles from Wasilla and nearly two thirds of the way to Reagan National.

Sarah Palin: An Intolerable Mistake on Hallowed Ground

Ed. Note: Governor Palin's Facebook Note: An Intolerable Mistake on Hallowed Ground was originally posted on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 2359 EDT. Daily Beast author Brian Ries launched a campaign to have the Note removed as "hate speech." The Note was removed. Reis said he undertook the campaign as an experiment "to see where the lines are drawn."

Governor Palin re-posted the original Note on July 22, 2010 at 1147 EDT, erasing Reis' short-lived "victory."

The Ed. Note was written July 22, 2010 at 1651 EDT.

Ovenight, Governor Palin posted via Facebook Note why the proposed mosque near the WTC site is wrong, and why religious tolerance is not an operative factor in the debate.

Earlier today, Mayor Bloomberg responded to my comments about the planned mosque at Ground Zero by suggesting that a decision not to allow the building of a mosque at that sacred place would somehow violate American principles of tolerance and openness.

No one is disputing that America stands for – and should stand for – religious tolerance. It is a foundation of our republic. This is not an issue of religious tolerance but of common moral sense. To build a mosque at Ground Zero is a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks. Just days after 9/11, the spiritual leader of the organization that wants to build the mosque, Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, suggested that blame be placed on the innocents when he stated that the “United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened” and that “in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the USA.” Rauf refuses to recognize that Hamas is a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of our ally, Israel, and refuses to provide information about the sources of funding for the $100 million mosque. Rauf also plays a key role in a group behind the flotilla designed to provoke Israel in its justifiable blockade of Gaza. These are just a few of the points Americans are realizing as New York considers the proposed mosque just a stone’s throw away from 9/11’s sacred ground.

I agree with the sister of one of the 9/11 victims (and a New York resident) who said: “This is a place which is 600 feet from where almost 3,000 people were torn to pieces by Islamic extremists. I think that it is incredibly insensitive and audacious really for them to build a mosque, not only on that site, but to do it specifically so that they could be in proximity to where that atrocity happened.”

Many Americans, myself included, feel it would be an intolerable and tragic mistake to allow such a project sponsored by such an individual to go forward on such hallowed ground. This is nothing close to “religious intolerance,” it’s just common decency.

Sarah Palin: Kelly Ayotte for New Hampshire

Governor Palin today endorsed via Facebook Note mama grizzly Kelly Ayott who is running for a US Senate seat in New Hampshire.

Todd, Willow, and I are headed out to Kodiak and Afognak to meet with logging families on the forested islands. As we work and sightsee on America’s largest island we’ll get to view more majestic bears, so now is a good time to draw attention to the political equivalent of the species.

It’s my honor to endorse a Granite State “mama grizzly” who has broken barriers, fought off and locked up criminals, and battled all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the rights of New Hampshire parents – and won!

New Hampshire is lucky to have Kelly Ayotte as a candidate for the U.S. Senate this year. Kelly is a daughter of the Granite State, a product of its public schools, and its first female Attorney General. In her impressive five years in the AG’s office, Kelly earned a reputation for being tough on crime, supportive of law enforcement, and tireless in the defense of the rights of the people of New Hampshire. When Planned Parenthood challenged New Hampshire’s parental notification law, Kelly fought them all the way to the Supreme Court and won.

She’s the proud mother of two and the wife of a combat veteran who flew missions over Iraq and currently serves in the Air National Guard. Kelly and her husband started a small landscaping/snow removal business; so, she understands first hand the crushing burden Washington imposes on our small businesses. This pro-life, pro-family, anti-tax constitutional commonsense conservative is the Democrats’ biggest fear in November. They’re already running false ads against her weeks before even the primary election. And on top of that Kelly is facing attacks from a self-funded millionaire running with an R next to his name who likes Obamacare and cap-and-tax.

Kelly is the strongest commonsense conservative who can win in the fall. I knew I liked her when I met her earlier this year, and I know this Granite Grizzly will represent New Hampshire with distinction in Washington.

Please join me in supporting Kelly Ayotte by visiting her website at www.ayotteforsenate.com and following her on Facebook and Twitter.

One final note: I spent time campaigning in New Hampshire in 2008, and I know that the good people there are a lot like Alaskans. In both of our states, we like to get to know the people running for office, look them in the eye, and judge their character. New Hampshire voters know not to rely on misleading negative ads. New Hampshire, tune out the ads and send your native daughter to the Senate. She’ll fight for you there just as passionately and fearlessly as she fought for you in highest court of the land.
